Ismaili community in Mumbai begins 2024 with coastal cleanup drive | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Around 250 volunteers of the Ismaili community joined hands with the Indian Coast Guard for the event which saw cleaning up of the coast.
The Ismaili community in India has been on the forefront in serving the citizens in various fields.
In Mumbai, as part of the Ismaili CIVIC initiative’s focus on sustainability and Healthcare, the community joined hands with the Indian Coast Guard for a mega Coastal Cleanup Drive recently at the Juhu Beach.The event was organized as part of the Indian Coast Guards 48th Raising Day celebrations. Around 250 volunteers from the Ismaili community participated in this event with a good number of volunteers from other like-minded groups as well.
The event also saw the presence of popular actress, UN Environmental Goodwill Ambassador & United Nations Secretary-General Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals, Dia Mirza. She also joined the clean up drive.
“Care for our planet is the responsibility of every individual, and environmental sustainability becomes achievable when we all work together to make a difference. The Ismaili community believes in being a part of the solution in protecting our planet. We are delighted to join hands with the Indian Coast Guard for this event and look forward to supporting more such endeavors in future,” said Sophia Premjee, Communications Co-ordinator, Ismaili Council for India. “Around 250 young Ismaili CIVIC volunteers have come forward to participate enthusiastically in the coastal cleanup activity this morning, exemplifying values of voluntary service, giving back and responsible citizenship”, she added.
Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, TM, Commander Coast Guard Region West, was also present at the event. He said: “As part of the commemoration of its 48th Raising Dday, the Indian Coast Guard Region (West) demonstrated unwavering environmental commitment by organizing a Special Coastal Cleanup Drive at Juhu Beach on 20th January 2024. The initiative exemplified their dedication towards maritime security and ecological preservation, uniting esteemed guests, ICG officers & men, and volunteers to actively participate in cleaning the coastal regions under their watch.”
Ismaili CIVIC is a global programme under which the Shia Ismaili Muslim community across the world has united around its centuries- old tradition of serving humanity by rendering voluntary service to improve the quality of life of the communities in which they live, regardless of faith, gender and background.
In India, Ismaili CIVIC has conducted multiple activities in Mumbai, Hyderabad and various cities in Gujarat. These include blood donation drives, and food drives during the month of Ramadan. On the invite from various government agencies, Ismaili CIVIC teams also support diverse festival-related events with crowd control and traffic management duties. Their teams also undertook clean drinking water distribution initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
