Nagpur: Two door-to-door garbage collection firms, appointed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), are lifting waste from only 38% of residences. The shocking information came to fore after the civic body’s solid waste management department recently started monitoring routes of both the firms through vehicle tracking system and found over 60% city not covered.
The firms are collecting only 90% waste from the houses situated on 145 routes (of 378 identified routes.
The ratio is very less on other routes, said deputy municipal commissioner Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
Now, NMC’s solid waste management department has issued show cause notices to both the firms asking why the agreements with them should not be terminated on the grounds of violation of terms and conditions.
After receiving several complaints about non-collection of garbage in the city, the VTS system was adopted by the NMC to monitor routes.
After adoption, 378 routes of both companies have been fixed and NMC is monitoring movement of these vehicles.
Surveillance of routes and operation of vehicles revealed that a firm engaged in lifting door-to-door garbage collection from areas under Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli and Nehru Nagar zones is unable to deploy on an average of five vehicles due to snag of a strength of 189 vehicles.
Similarly, tracking of routes and vehicles of remaining five zones — Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashi Nagar and Mangalwari — revealed that 14 vehicles are developing snag daily. TNN
