LUCKNOW: Prashant Kumar has been appointed as the new officiating director general of police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh. This is the fourth consecutive time that the state government has appointed an officiating DGP.
Kumar, a 1990 batch IPS officer, has a notable track record, with four president gallantry medals to his name. He has been praised for his leadership in handling law and order issues, particularly during the Kheri violence in 2021.Kumar has previously served as the additional director general of police, law and order, and has successfully led operations against criminals, including Gauri Yadav, who had a Rs 5 lakh reward on her.
He has also held positions in the CISF and ITBP, winning medals during his tenure. Prior to Kumar, Mukul Goel was the last full-time DGP, but he was removed from the position in May 2022, despite being due to retire in February 2024. Since then, three IPS officers have been made officiating DGPs, including DS Chauhan, RK Vishwakarma, and Vijaya Kumar.
