New Delhi: To conduct ongoing formative assessments of children with special needs, Delhi govt has decided to provide special education teachers a complete digital resource library mapped to the functional curriculum on an accessibility and inclusivity compliant learning management system in state-run schools.
According to officials, the inclusive education branch of Delhi govt is framing a suitable functional curriculum that will provide a common teaching and learning framework across all its schools for children with special needs.
“The objective of the functional curriculum is to cater to the needs of children with special needs studying in the state-run schools. It especially encompasses the development of life skills beyond academic learning,” said a Delhi govt official.
“In addition to education, these children have needs in other areas such as activities of daily living, motor functioning, and communication and behavioural management.
“Success of any inclusive education programme depends on how well these needs of children with special needs are catered,” the official added.
There are about 17,000 children with special needs studying in schools run by Delhi govt’s directorate of education in classes 1 to 12. There are nearly 1,900 special education teachers, including regular and guest, working with these children on the educational aspects.
“The digital resource library will give these educators access to an inclusivity compliant learning management system,” said another official.
According to the proposal prepared by the govt, the specialised agency setting up the digital resource library will provide training to 100 master trainers or special educator teachers on the learning management system.
A functional curriculum is being designed for children with disabilities to help them become employable after finishing their education. The directorate of education had earlier held consultative interactions with people from various industries to identify areas where it can work to make children employable.
The curriculum is being developed in each field of disability so that such children acquire skills according to their interests and talent and the digital resource library will help the educators get the necessary tools to train them.
“Our focus is that our children get skilled well in school and be independent for their future. We will further mould our curriculum in a way so that children with special needs get specialised attention with an appropriate functional curriculum,” said an official.
