Jaipur: RSS joint general secretary Manmohan Vaidya stated that the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world as a family) originated from India, which is a reason that our ancestors travelled the globe for business but never plundered, enslaved, and converted locals like the powers in Europe and Arabia did.
He was speaking on the second day of the Jaipur Literature Festival in a session titled ‘At Home and World’ with author and columnist Pawan K Verma and social scientist Badri Narayan in conversation with journalist Mandira Nayar on Friday.Raising the debate on India and Bharat, Vaidya, who shared RSS view on the same, said, “The name India was given by the British after colonising the country. Whereas Bharat has existed since ancient times and represents the cultural and spiritual ethos of the country, even the Constitution of India has word Bharat. Therefore, we feel that it is better to call India Bharat.” Clearing the RSS stand on inter-caste marriages, he said that they support such marriages, but even today, 90% of marriages take place within castes.
Vaidya argued that India is a society based nation, unlike the West which is based on the concept of nation states. “In our country, the society is dependent on each other for welfare while in the West the society depends upon the govt. “When the world struggled to handle the Covid pandemic, the govt here was joined by the common man in the mission. Without fear of getting infected, people helped each other. It pointed out that unlike in the West, where people are dependent on the state for welfare, in our country, people depend on each other for their welfare,” said Vaidya.
He underlined that if the Muslims of Indonesia cannot forget their forefathers, similarly, Indian Muslims should remember their forefathers. “Even though Indonesia is a Muslim-dominated country, Ramlila is organised there. When their PM visited India, the media asked him why Ramlila was organised in his country even though he is a Muslim. He said that they may have changed religion a few generations ago, but they cannot forget their forefathers. Muslims do come to RSS shakhas without changing their form of devotion, and many of them have been given responsibilities too,” said Vaidya.

In 1920, Muslims said they were a nation, not minority: Senior advocate
Senior advocate counters Supreme Court’s proposition that AMU is a minority institution by arguing that Muslims did not consider themselves a minority during British rule. Muslims were not categorized denominationally by the British India government when AMU Act was passed in 1920. Granting AMU minority status after 100 years would endanger its eminence as an institution of national importance.
