After Long Wait, Dda Hopes To Complete Ph I Of Airport Drain Project By March | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority will complete work on phase I (1.4 km) of Airport Drain Project in this financial year.
The long-awaited project will address the problem of flooding of runways, terminals, surroundings of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, and some parts of Dwarka. Lieutenant governor VK Saxena reviewed the project’s status during a joint meeting last month.
The project, costing Rs 69 crore, included constructing a 2.8 km drain along the airport boundary wall (opposite sector 8, Dwarka) and was divided in two phases (1.4 km each). While the phase I drain is supposed to be connected to the upstream side of trunk drain 2, the phase II drain will be connected to the downstream side of the same drain. This will help in proper discharging of rainwater from IGI Airport.
The work on the project, conceived in 2019, started in Aug 2020. “It was getting stuck due to a delay in tree cutting permission from the forest department. However, after long efforts permission was granted and till date majority of work at the site has been completed. We are expecting that no issue of waterlogging will be reported this monsoon in and around the area,” said an official earlier.
While the previous drain wasn’t big enough to meet the requirements, the size of the new drain will be enough to ensure no water collection happened at the northern side of the airport, said officials.
“The size of the newly constructed drain is 20 metre*2 metre at major portion (under phase I) in comparison to size of old drain which was 2 metre*1 metre diameter. In phase 2, the size of the drain will be 12metre wide*2 metre deep. Work is also in progress at phase II of the drain also, however due to heavy traffic movement near the project site we have to work cautiously,” said the official.
Earlier, a study was done for upgrading the drainage system in two phases after the airport authority approached DDA to resolve the waterlogging problem on its northern side. On the south side, PWD had already constructed a drain. “After completion of survey and other ground exercises, we moved for permission for tree translocation and related afforestation in Nov 2020 to the forest department,” said officials.
Later on LG’s direction, DDA moved high court seeking a direction to the department of environment, GNCTD for granting permission, which was granted on Aug 1, 2022.
