KALYAN: BJP’s Kalyan East MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, who is accused of firing at Shiv Sena Kalyan unit chief Mahesh Gaikwad in the senior inspector’s cabin in Ulhasnagar’s Hill Line police station late Friday, was arrested on Saturday, reports Pradeep Gupta. The Mahayuti alliance faced attacks over the violence between BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Sena functionaries.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has asked the DGP to conduct a high-level inquiry.
Mahesh Gaikwad is critical; another Sena functionary Rahul Patil, who was also shot at, is stable, said doctors at a Thane hospital. CM Shinde checked on their condition on Saturday while his son, Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde, spent all night in hospital.
MLA Gaikwad, and two BJP workers arrested along with him, were remanded to 12 days police custody. In court, the MLA said his son had been “framed by police under pressure from the CM though CCTV footage shows he was not involved in the firing”.
Police are looking for Gaikwad’s son Vaibhav and two other BJP workers. All six have been booked for attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting and under the Arms Act.
BJP MLA from Kalyan East Ganpat Gaikwad claimed that he resorted to firing on Friday night because his son Vaibhav was being manhandled by the Shiv Sena man’ Mahesh Gaikwad’s group inside the police station. Additional commisioner of police Dattatreya Shinde said CCTV camera footage of the incident showed the MLA suddenly getting up while the two Sainiks were seated in the inspector’s cabin and firing at them.
BJP workers Harshal Kene and Sandeep Sarvankar were arrested along with Ganpat Gaikwad, while the hunt is on for Gaikwad’s son Vaibhav and other workers Vicky Ganatra and Nagesh Badekar. The two Gaikwads in Friday night’s shooting inside an Ulhasnagar police station – Ganpat and Mahesh – have been engaged in a longstanding political fight and are also locked in a land dispute.
Ganpat Gaikwad was produced before judge A A Nikam of the Ulhasnagar court after the judge rejected a police request to produce him via video-conferencing. The police in Ulhasnagar said that the MLA’s son Vaibhav Gaikwad had gone to the Hill Line police station on Friday night to lodge a complaint against Sena’s Mahesh Gaikwad and some others for allegedly attempting to trespass into the MLA’s property in Dwarli village in Kalyan East.
After some time, Shiv Sainiks Mahesh Gaikwad, Rahul Patil and Chainu Jadhav also reached the police station along with their supporters to file a complaint against the BJP MLA regarding the same plot, alleging that the BJP legislator had tried to forcefully capture land belonging to a Scheduled Tribe family. Additional CP Shinde said, “Both the parties were complaining against each other in the cabin of senior inspector Anil Jagtap.
At the same time, supporters of both started creating a ruckus outside. Hearing that, inspector Jagtap went out to calm things down.” Shinde further said, “Ganpat Gaikwad then suddenly started firing on Mahesh Gaikwad and Rahul Patil. Hearing the sound, inspector Jagtap came back to his cabin and saw that Ganpat Gaikwad was beating Mahesh Gaikwad with the butt of his revolver. Inspector Jagtap grabbed the MLA’s revolver.”
The MLA’s private bodyguard Harshal Kene then entered the cabin and started firing at Mahesh Gaikwad with his licensed revolver. Other police personnel snatched the revolver from him and arrested both the accused, the police said. The injured duo were first admitted to Meera hospital in Thane, from where they were shifted to Jupiter hospital. Additional CP Shinde said that the police were collecting as much evidence as they could to make the case watertight. The Thane police have asked the crime branch to probe the case.
Heavy police bandobast has been deployed outside the offices of the two leaders in Kalyan East to prevent any untoward incident. There was unease among workers of the two rival camps on Saturday as charges have routinely been traded by the rival camps and local Sena and BJP functionaries have had strained ties.
Deputy CM Fadnavis said, “Without consideration of who belongs to which party, action will be taken in accordance with law. We need to find the truth as to what happened leading to firing at a police station.” A health bulletin issued by Jupiter Hospital said, “Patient Mahesh Gaikwad came… with multiple gunshot injuries on night of 2nd Feb… He was operated at night immediately as an emergency life-saving surgery.
Post-surgery, he is in the intensive care unit and on ventilator. His condition is currently critical and the expert team of specialist doctors including intensivist, general surgeon, thoracic and orthopaedic surgeon are monitoring the vitals closely.” Hospital authorities said Rahul Patil was also operated on and was stable.
