Bengaluru: Debutants Punjab FC secured a convincing 3-1 win over Bengaluru FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday to bag only their second victory in the Indian Super League. Goals came in thick and fast in a fixture that produced end-to-end action, much like in the game when the two teams met in the Garden City earlier in the season.
BFC skipper Sunil Chhetri opened the scoring in the 15th minute. He made the most of a cross by Roshan Singh, beat an aerial challenge by Greece’s Dimitris Chatziisaias to nod the ball into the back of the net. But the Blues soon saw the game slip away after a superb offensive show by Punjab and their bolstered attacking contingent. Full-back Tekcham Abhishek Singh whipped in a cross for former NEUFC forward Wimar Jordan Gil, who scored with a fine leaping header as Punjab restored parity in just eight minutes. Slovenian Luka Majcen put his team ahead in the 71st minute as he latched on to a pass to put his team ahead. Madih Talal, who provided the assist to Majcen, then pounced on a defensive error and chipped the ball over Sandhu to seal the deal for the home team.
BFC, who had strengthened their defence in the winter transfer window, didn’t have anything to show for it as they crashed to a big defeat. It was BFC’s sixth loss in 13 outings as they dropped to tenth spot below PFC, who climbed to ninth.
Results: Punjab FC 3 (Wimar Jordan 23, Majcen 71, Talal 77) bt Bengaluru FC 1 (Sunil Chhetri 15); Mohun Bagan 2 (Sadiku 17, Petratos 87) drew with East Bengal 2 (Ajay Chhetri 3, Cleiton Silva 55).Today’s match: Mumbai City FC vs Jamshedpur FC (Live, Sports 18, 8 pm)
