Coimbatore: The district consumer disputes redressal commission has directed TATA AIG General Insurance Company to pay 15 lakh with interest to the dependents of a deceased person from the city and another 50,000 in compensation for non-payment of insured amount.
According to the commission, M Ravi, of Ramanathapuram, had taken a policy issued by Tata AIG General Insurance Company.The sum insured was ₹15 lakh. Accidental death, permanent total disability and critical illness were covered under the policy.
“Ravi died on May 7, 2021, after he contracted Covid-19. His wife R Violet subsequently approached the insurance firm to claim the insured amount. However, there was no response. Ravi’s wife then approached us complaining about the insurance firm’s deficiency in service,” the commission said.
In its order, commission president R Thangavel and member G Suguna said, “TATA AIG General Insurance Company has to pay the complainant the sum insured (15 lakh) along with 9% interest from the date of filing the complaint.”
It also directed the insurance company to pay 50,000 to the complainant for the mental agony it caused and its deficiency in service, and another 5,000 towards the cost of legal proceedings.
