Pune: The city’s new police commissioner (CP), Amitesh Kumar, has promised a major crackdown on illicit activities like gambling dens, illicit liquor trade, prostitution and more under his watch, as well as a promise to resolve traffic issues.
Kumar further cautioned police personnel to refrain from getting involved in settlement of land deals and disputes.“I have asked my officers not to play with fire — if something goes wrong in dealing with such things, I will take strong action on them,” said Kumar, adding, “I have zero tolerance for illegal activities. All unauthorized businesses must remain shut.”
The top cop said, “We will also take action against eateries, pubs and dance floors staying open after 11.30pm and 1.30am, based on the license they possess. We will act against establishments that violate Supreme Court directives curbing use of loudspeakers after 10.30pm.”
According to Kumar, the vigil on criminals will be stringent. “We will create a digital dossier of criminals on police records, gangsters and gang members. Our crime branch and police stations will regularly check these. I will take strong action against personnel if any criminal on record indulges in criminal activity under their jurisdiction,” he said.
Kumar will hold special ‘darbars’ for constables to address problems and concerns in service. “I will conduct these sessions for both constables and officers at the zone level and try to address their issues,” he said.
On Pune’s traffic situation, the CP said, “Due to ongoing infrastructure development projects, many roads face traffic snarls daily. I have directed the traffic police to regulate traffic and decongest roads instead of focusing on enforcement. The latter is not the priority at the moment. They should reduce traffic congestion and facilitate vehicular movement.”
He added, “We have observed that road conditions at various traffic light junctions are not good. Owing to this, vehicles move slowly and it leads to traffic jams at junctions. We will take up this issue with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). We will identify roads where regular traffic chaos prevails and will study the issues there, then work to decongest these stretches.”
