CHENNAI: DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant on Wednesday said the district secretaries wanted the party to contest in an alliance that offers more seats than it contested in 2019 general elections.
The DMDK under the leadership of late leader Vijayakant was a constituent of AIADMK-led alliance during last election and contested in 14 Lok Sabha seats with a promise of one Rajya Sabha seat.
Talking to reporters here, after a meeting of district secretaries, Premalatha said several functionaries on Wednesday even suggested going it alone in the forthcoming elections.
“The final decision is to contest in an alliance that offers more seats than offered in 2019. We will take efforts in that direction,” the DMDK leader said.
The meeting of district secretaries took into account the local body polls scheduled next year and the assembly elections in 2026.
The party has plans to hold public rallies in memory of Vijayakant in four zones in the state and observe the party’s flag day on February 12. Premalatha rubbished reports of holding direct and indirect poll talks with the parties for alliance, saying they were speculations.
The district secretaries passed ten resolutions, among other things, taking a pledge in support of Premalatha to emerge victoriously, and authorized the leader to constitute committees and finalize the alliance.
A resolution thanked Vijayakant family for setting up Vallal Vijayakant Memorial Annathana Trust to offer free food and assistance to those visiting the memorial in party headquarters.
