PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to introduce a revised pay and park policy after the earlier initiative started in 2021 failed to take off.
The civic body had given a contract to run the pay and park facility to a private vendor. “Earlier, the plan was implemented by the engineering department, but now we have proposed to decentralise it and allot the work to zonal offices of the municipal corporation.Four officials from the land and estate department will be appointed to monitor the work. The proposal will be sent for final approval soon,” Bapusaheb Gaikwad, the executive engineer of PCMC, told TOI.
The contract to operate the pay and park facility at 58 places was awarded to just one vendor, but now the civic body has planned to rope in multiple agencies to manage different parking slots.
The tenders for the same will be floated at ward levels.
“The previous vendor had started the facility at 40 out of 58 spots and failed to implement it well. He also suffered losses due to pandemic. Besides, towing of vehicles from no parking zones was not happening until the civic body floated a separate tender for it. As a result, people did not opt for the pay and park facility.,” a senior PCMC official said.
The municipal corporation, last time, had floated a separate tender to tow vehicles as the newly formed Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate did not have approval for the task.
However, the commissionerate received permission last year from the department concerned to take action on wrongly parked vehicles, and the PCMC will not float any tender to appoint an agency to tow vehicles.
Gaikwad also said the parking charges under the new policy will remain the same, and a decision to increase the charges will be taken once it gets a good response. According to officials, two- and three-wheelers will have to pay Rs5 per hour, while four-wheelers will pay Rs10 per hour. Vehicles such as minibuses will have to pay Rs25, whereas heavy vehicles will have to shell out Rs100 per hour.
