Sambalpur: Police on Tuesday arrested a physics teacher for sexually harassing a 17-year-old Plus II first-year girl student in a college in Sambalpur district.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of the area, P K Meher, said a local court sent the teacher to judicial custody after his arrest.
According to the complaint filed by the girl on Monday, she was abused first in the physics laboratory and later in classrooms. The alleged incidents began during the college’s annual day on Dec 24. The teenager stated in her complaint that she felt compelled to report the incidents after two months of enduring the assaults.
The police said investigation revealed that the lecturer allegedly sent the girl and two other students to the physics laboratory to organise and clean the facility.
Later, he sent the other two students away before molesting the 17-year-old. The harassment extended beyond physical encounters, as the lecturer reportedly continued to call her when she was at home due to health issues.
Expressing fear for her safety and well-being, the girl sought a transfer to another college in her complaint.
The police have registered a case under Section 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012 (aggravated sexual assault) besides IPC sections 341 (wrongful confinement) and 354-A (sexual harassment).
