PUNE: PMC has started tetanus vaccination of Std V, VI, IX and X students at civic schools in a first such initiative for the municipal corporation.
Dr Rajesh Dighe, chief immunization officer at PMC, said, “This is the first time we are undertaking tetanus vaccination for children in civic schools. The DPT booster and pentavalent vaccines provided under the Centre’s universal immunisation programme till the age of five do have the components of tetanus vaccine. But, as the kids grow older, the immunogenicity of the vaccine goes down. So, it is important to vaccinate children above the age of five too.”
“PMC aims to immunise 13,000 eligible students under the drive,” a civic official said.
