Nagpur: Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis hailed Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to give the NCP party symbol to Ajit Pawar faction, saying it was ‘consistent’ with previous decisions. Meanwhile, Katol MLA Anil Deshmukh, who is with the Sharad Pawar faction, said it was ‘vendetta’ politics.
Fadnavis said, “I congratulate Ajit dada for today’s decision.Also, this decision is consistent with previous cases and hence it was on expected lines. In the last few years, ECI has taken similar stand. One example is the Samajwadi Party, when there was a dispute within that party.”
Deshmukh said the party symbol can be taken away but citizens recognize the party with its founder. Deshmukh said, “Our party is Sharad Pawar and our symbol is also Sharad Pawar.”
He added that there is a pattern to such decisions. “A few months back, Uddhav Thackeray’s party Shiv Sena and its symbol were given to Ekhnath Shinde. This is vendetta politics as everything is being done in a planned manner and Fadnavis is aware of all this.”
Majority of the NCP MLAs have sided with Ajit Pawar. “In a democracy, it’s the majority’s decision which prevails. But this is not just about numbers. There were other things such as what’s the constitution of the party, how much of it was followed , were elections held or not etc,” said Fadnavis, adding, “In 2019, those who killed democracy, those who keep yelling that democracy is in danger, will now understand, what exactly democracy means.”
