BENGALURU: The state govt on Wednesday banned hookah bars across the state, citing ‘public health and safety’ concerns. The directive also prohibits the sale of hookah and related ingredients, advertising for the same and promoting the business.
An order to this effect was issued by the health department, noting: “Hookahs are usually used in closed spaces. Moreover, it is inhaled through the mouth and shared by multiple people. There is a high risk of hookah users contracting herpes, hepatitis and other diseases.” Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had earlier said: “Whenever we consume hookah, we consume it for 30-45 minutes, which is equal to smoking 20-40 cigarettes.” tnn
