Bengaluru: The high court has conditionally permitted Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) to go ahead with the appointments of 404 assistant engineers, subject to the outcome of writ appeals pending before it.
As many as 91 of the appointments are for Kalyana Karnataka and 313 for the rest of the state.
A division bench that was headed by Chief Justice PS Dinesh Kumar, which passed the interim order, said KPTCL shall make it clear in the appointment orders that the recruitments are subject to the outcome of the writ appeals.
If the appellants succeed and if they are selected, their appointments shall be made by properly fixing the seniority and roster point.
The KPTCL had called applications for 505 posts of assistant engineers and a competitive examination was conducted by the KEA. A list of 501 eligible candidates was prepared on Jan 3, 2023. Subsequently, it was found that a few key answers were not correct and thereafter, a revised list was prepared on Feb 4, 2023, which had 636 eligible candidates.
Some of the candidates challenged the second list and a single-judge bench allowed their petitions and directed the KPTCL to go ahead with the first list. This order was challenged by a group of 55 aggrieved candidates.
The KPTCL prayed the court to let it go ahead with the appointments stating the firm falls under the ‘essential services category’. It said it should be permitted to appoint 404 candidates, who are found eligible after applying the roster.
“We are conscious of the fact that KPTCL falls under the ‘essential services category’ and requires engineers. It is not in dispute that as per the first list, there were, in all, 501 eligible candidates,” the bench said.
“As per the revised list which is based on a few incorrect key answers, 135 new candidates have been added. The number of appellants before us is 55,” the bench pointed out.
