Chennai: Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is facing trouble from Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder T Velmurugan, who said he would send a legal notice to the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding that the commission refrain from assigning the acronym TVK to the actor’s party.
“We are already using the acronym TVK. If Vijay is also using the same acronym, it might cause confusion not just to cadres of both parties but also to the public. For instance, recently, our party’s Krishnagiri district secretary died in a road accident and when TVK was mentioned in newspapers, cadres of both the parties panicked. The same thing will happen in future,” Velmurugan told ToI.
“To avoid the confusion, either the ECI should not permit the usage of TVK or should make changes like adding the name Vijay as a suffix to TVK. Vijay’s party can either be called TVK(V) or TVK(Vijay) but not just TVK. We will send a notice to ECI asking it not to assign the acronym TVK to Vijay’s party,” Velmurugan said.
Velmurugan was a PMK MLA between 2006 and 2011. He broke away from the party and formed TVK in 2012. He got the camera symbol from the Election Commission. He joined DMK alliance in 2019 and contested in the rising sun symbol in 2021 state assembly election from Panruti constituency and won.
Now, Velmurugan is keen on a Lok Sabha seat in the DMK alliance. “When we joined the DMK alliance in 2019, they assured us that next time we would be allotted a Lok Sabha seat. Based on the assurance, we worked across the state for the victory of the alliance,” Velmurugan said.
“Fifteen district units from Naam Tamizhar Katchi joined our party and strengthened our presence in southern districts as well. Now, we are going to demand Cuddalore Lok Sabha seat from DMK. We hope they will allot us the seat,” Velmurugan said.
