Kolkata: The South Traffic Guard has removed all dedicated channels for pedestrian movement on the JL Nehru Road blacktop and those lying in front of the Grand arcade – from Thursday. The drop gates too were removed.
“Since hawkers are leaving enough space for pedestrian movement and ensuring that two-thirds of the pavement is left open, there is no need to eat up road space any more.We will also ensure that taxi and app cab parking takes place closer to the pavement. Finally, these channels need effective monitoring on ground. At present, with manpower crunch, we do not wish to assign resources where there is little need for the same,”cops said.
Cops want the parking lot opposite the Grand Hotel to shrink further. Sources at Lalbazar stated that the cops will raise objections to possible night bazaar if it is done without a proper traffic audit. “We will create a special channelizer at the New Market entry point from where cabs and app cabs had to come for pick-up and drop of passengers. Cops will be deployed to ensure that JL Nehru Road remains moving all through the evening,” cops added.
