Coimbatore: Despite allotting ₹25 lakh in this financial year budget, the city corporation is yet to rope in appropriate technologies for carrying out tax collection operations through mobile phone QR code scanning, Google Pay and Phone Pe apps.
The corporation has one tax collection centre each at five zonal offices and 29 centres across the city. The tax is collected by various modes such as cash, cheque, demand draft, credit card and debit card.Besides, property tax, vacant land tax, professional tax and drinking water charges are collected via tnurbanepay.tn.gov.in.
Dharshana, who owns a construction business, said, “We welcome the city corporation’s plan to introduce QR code and UPI to collect taxes. The only drawback is that UPI is restricted to payment limits. If considered by the government, it can be made flexible for a larger amount.”
Jenin, a resident of Ganapathy and a property taxpayer, said, “QR code is an easy method to pay and requires less time. The use of UPI would enable direct payment methods rather than multiple verifications. Once saved, the UPI can be accessed 24×7. Tax centres function only for limited timing. The digital transaction enables the extension of time for the entire day.”
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said, “The installation of QR code will be done through the direct market access (DMA). We are still in discussion with the collaborating banks for its development. A review meeting is arranged with the DMA team regarding the update. Its implementation can be expected at the earliest.”
