AIZAWL: In a promising development concerning the enduring border conflict between Assam and Mizoram, the CMs of the neighbouring states met in Guwahati on Friday morning. During this meeting, they pledged to exert concerted efforts to resolve the border dispute.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma provided assurance to his Mizoram counterpart, Lalduhoma, committing that once the ongoing Assam state assembly session is over, he would dispatch his minister responsible for boundary matters to Aizawl. This initiative aims to propel forward the border discussions, which have thus far encountered significant obstacles.
Both chief ministers have shown a commitment to peace and dialogue, with several rounds of talks held to maintain tranquility along the interstate boundary. The meeting in Guwahati was likely a continuation of these efforts, aiming to reach a political resolution to the border issues and prevent future conflicts, sources close to CM Lalduhoma said.
The two states share a 164km boundary, which has been a point of contention due to differing interpretations of colonial-era demarcations from 1875 and 1933.
In July 2021, this dispute escalated into a violent clash near Mizoram’s Vairengte village, tragically resulting in the loss of lives and injuries. This was the first CM-level meeting after Lalduhoma assumed office as CM in Mizoram in December last year.
Besides a plethora of official-level talks on the border dispute between the two states, three rounds of minister-level talks and three rounds of talks at the chief minister-level, including Friday parleys, had been held since July 2021.
