Nagpur: Confidence Petroleum, a Nagpur based company, has flagged off works on setting up a new plant to make high pressure cylinders out of composite material.
Foreseeing an emerging trend in the use of alternate fuels, including hydrogen, the company is eyeing business from original equipment makers in the automobile sector for the cylinders that would be made in its upcoming plant at Butibori industrial estate of MIDC.
A ground breaking ceremony was held at the site on Thursday. Nitin Khara, chairman of Confidence Petroleum, told TOI that the high pressure cylinders can carry CNG, oxygen, nitrogen and even green hydrogen.
“We already supply cylinders to the automobile sector for CNG vehicles. However, these are metal cylinders. The composite material cylinders to be made at the proposed plant will be one-third the weight of current cylinders. They can also be filled with hydrogen, which is expected to be the automobile fuel of the future,” said Khara.
The Type-4 cylinders will be manufactured using German technology, Khara said, claiming that this would be one of its kind plant in the country. The hi-tech machinery has already reached the site, said Khara.
The first phase will lead to an investment Rs140 crore, with over Rs350 crore to be pumped in for the entire project, said Khara. The plan is to start production by August 15 this year and or at the most by Diwali 2024, he said.
Apart from the automobile sector, business would also come from city gas distribution companies. The gas distributors which supply piped domestic gas have to often transport gas from their mother station to units down the line in cylinders for further distribution to the end consumers via ducts.
If the pipeline is not in place, gas is transported in cylinders. The lighter weight of composite material cylinders may give the company an advantage, said Khara.
