Gang Selling Stolen Phones Busted: Delhi Police Arrests LLB Student | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: With the arrest of a 22-year-old LLB student, Delhi Police busted a gang involved in stealing and selling stolen phones in the city. Suspect Saurabh allegedly purchased phones from burglars and had created two fictitious online companies to sell them to mobile dealers, police said.
Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Rohit Meena said that on Jan 30, a complaint was received regarding the theft of three mobile phones, jewellery, and other items from a house in Nanakpura.
During investigation, special staff team scanned 150 CCTV cameras around the scene of crime. On Feb 3, they found that IMEI of one of the stolen phones was active and its location was traced to near IIT flyover.
“Based on the phone’s location, police apprehended Roj Ali (35) and recovered the stolen mobile phone. Ali claimed to have purchased it from a shop in Tughlaqabad,” DCP Meena said, adding that shop owner, Inderjeet Prajapati (35), was also nabbed.
Prajapati claimed to have purchased around 60-65 mobile phones from Saurabh, and handed over five stolen phones allegedly bought from the suspect, Meena said.
“Upon reaching Saurabh’s flat, officers found him inside. However, before opening the door, the accused allegedly deleted all data from his mobile phone. Initially claiming to be an advocate, Saurabh was later found to be an LLB student,” the DCP said.
Upon Saurabh’s instance, police raided a location in Okhla, apprehending Mumtaj Alam (43), a burglar. His juvenile associate was detained later. Both had prior involvement in 12 criminal cases and struggled with drug addiction.
“Saurabh used to purchase phones from snatchers and burglars after verifying their details on the ZIPNET. He then sold them to mobile dealers at cheap prices,” said the DCP, adding he had created fictitious online companies to contact dealers for selling stolen phones.
