Bengaluru: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has warned PhD candidates against publishing their work in non-relevant journals.
In a circular issued on Feb 7, the university said research papers published in non-relevant journals will not be considered for awarding PhD degrees. The university gave the example of a computer science, electronics, or electrical engineering paper published in a chemistry-related journal.
As per VTU PhD regulations 2023, a research scholar from the 2020 batch should publish a minimum of one research paper in a Quartile-indexed journal.
The university also highlighted the issue of scholars presenting forged letters to obtain transfers to other universities. According to the regulations, students from other state universities, deemed-to-be varsities, defence organisations, national laboratories or research organisations can take transfers to VTU.
However, many scholars from private universities seek their transfers to VTU. “…This is not allowed. It has also been noted that some of the candidates are submitting false/forged documents in an attempt to obtain a transfer from other universities. We will take legal action against such applicants if we discover such materials,” the varsity warned.
It also spoke about researchers not taking permission from the university to change their guides. As per the regulations, the university has to recognise the faculty as a research supervisor. These supervisors cannot supervise research scholars in other institutions, where they can only act as co-supervisors. Also, degrees will not be awarded if the supervisor is not an employee of the university or a constituent college.
VTU said the scholars have to follow the regulations to uphold the academic institution’s integrity.
“There are no changes made to the regulations but students have been asked to follow them strictly,” said VTU vice chancellor Vidyashankar S.
