NEW DELHI: New Delhi Municipal Council will hold a tulip festival from Feb 10-21 in Chanakyapuri to mark the beginning of the spring season. The festival will have a tulip walk, an exhibition on tulips and a photo competition. An Indo-Dutch music event at Nehru Park with flowers in the background will also be a part of the festival.
“The walk will be held along Shanti Path, where a 1.5km stretch has tulips of all colours growing. While people can visit the place anytime, those who want to learn about the tulip and its origins can join the walk at 8-10am, when experts will be present,” an official said. “An exhibition based on the monuments around Shanti Path, the history of tulips and the variety of tulips growing in Lutyens’ Delhi will be presented too.”
The photography competition will be open till Feb 21. “We will judge the three best pictures every day and upload them on our social media platforms. Eventually, the best photograph among them all will be awarded. This is aimed at motivating people to come out and see the tulips,” said NDMC chairman Amit Yadav.
The Song of Water Indo-Dutch Music Event will be held on Feb 16 with artists from India and Holland performing. The event has the theme of ‘see the music, hear the art’. An NDMC official explained, “The Song of Water is basically a musical and visual journey about the flow of river Ganga in India and the sea in the Netherlands in the form of a multimedia concert. The music is inspired by artworks selected by artists and curators in India and the Netherlands. We have tied up with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations on the event.”
This year, NDMC planted two lakh tulip bulbs of white, yellow, red, pink, orange, purple, black and yellow-red colours, all sourced from Holland. The cultivation began in mid-Dec last year at major parks, gardens and roundabouts and in the vicinity of the vice-president’s bungalow, 11 Murti and Shanti Path.
After Feb 21, NDMC will launch a flower festival in which other seasonal flowers will be showcased at roundabouts, parks and gardens. “The Rose Festival will begin on Feb 24 till March 3, a flower show will be organised on March 8-9 and a food festival on March 10, in which hotels and restaurants will be invited to prepare flower-based dishes. The locations for these events will be finalised soon. Spic-Macay will also hold the Music in the Park even at Nehru Park on March 10,” revealed an official.
Apart from tulips, other seasonal flowers such as salvia, petunia, antirrhinum, phlox, verbena and marigold are also in NDMC’s plans for a colourful spring in the city.
