NEW DELHI: This group of 18-21-year-olds bore tattoos of roses on their right hands and zipped around on flashy bikes. With a knack for stealing sports bikes and snatching phones, these thrill-seekers weren’t in it just for the adrenaline rush, they also showcased their wild stunts on social media to woo their significant others.
Just around the cusp of Valentine’s Day, police have arrested four men of the notorious ‘Rose Gang’ of north-west Delhi which was behind a string of 14 thefts and snatchings across the city. The accused have been identified as Nikhil Puri (19), Rohit (21), Deepak (18) and Akash (19). Police are still on the lookout for their gang head.
According to DCP (North-west) Jitendra Kumar Meena, they had received a tip-off regarding the movement of the suspects around Kanhaiya Nagar. “On Feb 8, a police team was formed and a trap was laid around the area. When a motorcycle with three young riders was intercepted, the trio attempted to flee but were chased and apprehended,” said the senior police officer.
Meena added that three stolen mobile phones were found in their possession while the bike they were riding was also found to be stolen. During interrogation, the gang members confessed to have committed several thefts across the capital.
Their modus operandi? Breaking bike locks and revving off to snatch phones, only to resurface on social media feeds with jaw-dropping stunts. “Their arrests led to the recovery of eight more stolen motorcycles from their possession,” the DCP added.
The gang members told the cops that they engaged in thefts and snatchings in order to earn easy money and finance their lavish lifestyles. Besides the thrill-seeking exploits, they also admitted that they used the bikes in order to gain social status. They often posted videos of their exploits on social media platforms.
All the four arrested accused have been remanded to judicial custody. “Further investigation remains under way to identify and nab the gang head named ‘Bilora’ who is wanted in many cases. Efforts are being made to trace the gang’s involvement in some other cases too,” the officer added.
