Pune: Volunteers of ‘Wake Up Punekar‘, an initiative by the Congress party’s state vice president Mohan Joshi, highlighted the traffic issue at various junctions on the Pune-Ahmednagar road, including the Phoenix Mall Chowk and Golf Course Chowk, among others, on Friday evening.
“The issue [of traffic] is widespread in Pune city, and we have been conducting this campaign for a fortnight now across the city.We spoke with several citizens at the chronic spots. Citizens were angry about the situation, and everyone demanded a solution,” Sanket Galande, a member of the campaign, told TOI.
The volunteers, including Sanket Galande, began the awareness campaign in the evening at 6pm at Vimannagar and raised questions with the commuters regarding the traffic-related issues they regularly face.
After Vimannagar, the volunteers moved to Golf Course Chowk, followed by Vishrantwadi Chowk. “I avoid peak hours when I am travelling in this area. I start from my office on Dhole Patil Road a little late in the evening so that I do not have to face the traffic jam,” Shrikrishna Patil, a commuter, told TOI.
A flyover has been planned at Vishrantwadi Chowk; however, by the time it is constructed, citizens claim, the situation will get much worse.
“We are old residents of this area, and the situation was not as bad over eight years ago as it is now. Now the areas have expanded beyond what anyone could have imagined, and because of the IT hub in Pune, many citizens from other places have come here and settled. The infrastructural development, on the other hand, has not kept up with the expansion and has moved at snail’s pace, leading to these issues,” Kiran Pawar, a Tingre Nagar resident, said.
