Chennai: As part of its fishing expedition to strengthen its alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK has intensified its search for allies. The PMK and DMDK are potential allies, said party sources.
A section of senior office-bearers in the PMK favours an alliance with the AIADMK and has conveyed as much to the party high command. The PMK leadership may be more inclined towards the BJP, multiple sources told TOI.
AIADMK sources said negotiations with PMK and DMDK are on. “Talks are still on but there is no remarkable progress after the preliminary discussions recently. The AIADMK wants to contest in the company of these parties and put up a grand show to capitalise on the perceived anti-incumbency against DMK. Given the hiccups in talks within the DMK alliance, allies may come to us for talks too. Nothing is impossible till the last day,” said a former AIADMK minister, seeking anonymity. The PMK and DMDK contested seven and four seats respectively in the 2019 LS polls, while the AIADMK contested 20 seats and the BJP five.
Some politicians say an AIADMK-PMK front could change the electoral dynamics in constituencies such as Chidambaram, Villupuram, Arani, Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri and Salem in the northern and north-western belt. Not long ago, AIADMK seniors openly criticised the alliance with the PMK for the electoral setback despite its offer of 10.5% quota to vanniyars that was later struck down by the SC. Nevertheless, Anbumani Ramadoss was the first leader to congratulate Edappadi K Palaniswami when the AIADMK general council elected him interim general secretary in July 2022.
The lack of a Prime Ministerial candidate might prove a setback for the AIADMK. “A section in the PMK believes the AIADMK lacks energy and momentum after a series of electoral losses and bitter infighting involving courts and the Election Commission, while the BJP has picked up momentum in the state. It will be no surprise if the PMK joins the BJP-led NDA finally,” said a source, privy to developments. Actor R Sarathkumar’s, All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi is likely to join the AIADMK.
