Drivers, school authorities booked for kid’s death in van – Kanpur news | Kanpur News – Times of India

Kanpur: Police registered a case in connection with road accident in Billhaur’s Araul area, in which, a 13-year-old boy died and eight children commuting in a school van were injured on Thursday.
DCP (West) Vijay Dhul said a case had been registered against van driver Hariom Katiyar, driver of a loader Rishi Katiyar, one truck driver, and the principal and manager of Soney Lal Patel Education Centre.nThe official said investigation and evidence collected so far by Forensic unit revealed that the truck into which van crashed after being hit by a loader was wrongly parked on the road.
“Drivers of the loader as well as of the van carrying 11 students of Soney Lal Patel Education Centre were both driving carelessly,” he said and added, “They have been arrested, and the truck driver is being detained and interrogated.” The investigation also revealed that the driver of the school van did not have a driving licence, hence, charges under section of 304 A IPC have been filed against him, said the DCP. “It came to fore that the school principal and manager failed to comply with rules laid down for operation of school vans and were found to be non-serious and police are collecting evidence to initiate action against them,” said the DCP. He added that police registered a case against both drivers under IPC sections 279, 337, 338 and 304.
In view of the Araul accident, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shiva Singh issued guidelines to schools on Friday, as per which, school vehicles must have two fire extinguishers near the driver’s cabin and emergency exit and the bus staff must be trained to operate them. Also, vehicles should have proper permits, and ‘On School Duty’ should be written on the front and back of the school vehicle. Children should not sit in the vehicle beyond its seating capacity and the school vehicle must have a first aid box and potable water. Every school vehicle must have name of the school, telephone number and name, address, driving licence number and mobile number of the driver. Helpline numbers of the transport department and police department should be mentioned on the school vehicle. The driver of school vehicle should have a minimum five years of experience and there should be no record of any previous traffic related or any other criminal offense against him. tnn
