Chennai: As the financial year is coming to a close, Tambaram Corporation has urged residents to opt for QR code-based payments to pay taxes by March. While physical counters will remain open, the civic body is encouraging more people to opt for digital channels for tax transactions.
Until now, 35% of the tax payments are done online in Tambaram and the civic body wants to increase this.Digital payments will modernise operations, enhance financial management, and contribute to the overall development of the civic body, officials said. “We want to enhance efficiency by reducing the manual processing of cash transactions. This will streamline administrative procedures too,” she said. The civic body launched its QR code-based service delivery system last year. The project began in East Tambaram, where QR codes were strategically placed on properties and officials embarked on a comprehensive door-to-door campaign after enrolling 2,797 property owners in the programme.
Residents welcome this move, but there are challenges too. “When I access the portal, it takes a lot of time to open. The civic body should improve its user experience and accessibility,” said Ragavendran H, a resident of Thiruneermalai. However, glitches may have been triggered by a surge in traffic, said a corporation official. “We are working to improve e-governance,” he added.
