Gurgaon: Vegetable traders have launched an indefinite strike against a ‘market fee’ charged by the govt. The state govt had started collecting a 1% ‘market fee’ and 1% ‘HRDF fee’ from traders during the pandemic, seeking their contribution in times of crisis.
The govt, they said, had promised to revoke the fee after the restrictions eased, but nothing was done on the ground.Instead, the Haryana state agricultural marketing board hiked the market fee by 40% last year and the traders were asked to pay this in advance.
On Dec 20, the traders had observed a symbolic strike and threatened to carry out an indefinite agitation later. The strike by 300 traders did not affect sales in the city on Saturday, but could lead to a shortage of supplies if it continues.
The vegetable dealers are protesting against the 40% hike and the advance tax payment mode, alongside demanding that the 1% market fee and HRDF fee imposed during the pandemic be revoked.
Indrajeet Singh Thakran, head of the veggie traders’ union in Gurgaon, said, “Pandemic is long gone and businesses have returned to normal. We agreed to pay the fee back then considering the crisis that we were unanimously facing. Now when everything is back to normal, charging a fee is wrong and hiking it is worse. We have requested the government to roll back the fee time and again, but to no avail.”
State president of All India Vegetable Market Association, Rajendra Thakral said that the delegation will meet the representatives of the state government once again with their demands.
Earlier in 2021, the state government had approved the provision of allowing 1% exemption of market fee to small traders with turnover of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. The traders are however demanding removal of the entire market fee for all.
