Prayagraj: Volunteers of the lost & found camp, popular as ‘Bhoole Bhatke Shivir’, have reunited as many as 3,284 people, including 71 children, with their families at the ongoing Magh Mela on the banks of Ganga, between Jan 14 and Feb 10.
Most of the lost or missing persons reunited with their families over the past 37 days were from Gorakhpur, Bahraich, Gonda, Barabanki and Kushi Nagar districts.
This year, the volunteers helped reunite the maximum 1,565 people with their families on the day of Mauni Amavasya snan (Feb 9), when over 2.18 crore devotees from across the world took a holy dip in Sangam.
In 2023 Magh Mela, the volunteers had reunited 6,350 persons. Bhoole Bhatke Shivir organiser Umesh Tiwari TOI, “This time in Magh Mela, about 70 persons of adults in the 45 to 90 years age group were reunited with their families a majority of them was from Gorakhpur and Devi Patan range.” Tiwari, however, said “We have deputed five teams of volunteers in all five sectors of mela area to bring missing or lost persons to the camp and take care of them till they were reunited with their families. This is 78th year of the initiative, over which period, the number of people reunited with families has reached 15.35 lakh people.”
The volunteers are active during mega religious fairs like Magh Mela, Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh.
The ‘Bhoole Bhatke Shivir’ was founded by late Raja Ram Tiwari in 1946, the camp has reunited so far, 15,35,960 people, including 21,907 children. This year, the are preparing digital record of missing and reunited persons in view of the forthcoming Kumbh festival in 2025, when they plan to set up hi-tech digital camps.
Among the volunteers, there are at least 20 whose three generations have worked for the cause and they regard the work no less than a religious duty.
