BENGALURU: A 48-year-old man did not imagine police would catch him 26 years after he had allegedly committed a crime.
Accused of snatching the gold chain of a woman in 1998, Gulab Khan alias Gullu and his associate evaded court proceedings till the law finally caught up with him this month. According to police, Gullu and his aide committed the crime when Vasantha, a resident of Jayanagar 4th Block, was walking on the road.Gullu, who was residing in Nayandahalli, and his associate were arrested. After coming out of jail on bail, the duo did not appear before the court even once. They were declared proclaimed offenders and a register was maintained against them.
Top police officers, during a recent review meeting, instructed their subordinates to nab all suspects who were not attending court proceedings. Assistant sub-inspector Lakshmanachar KV, who was assigned to trace Gullu, collected information without technical support. He and his colleagues – constables Kumaraswamy, Pruthviraj and Deekshit – camped near Gullu’s house for a couple of days and managed to nab him in the early hours of Feb 3.
Gullu had installed an advanced CCTV camera which would rotate in the direction of people’s movements. The camera was often monitored by his family members.
Gullu told police after they came out on bail, he and his family went to Ramanagara where he worked as a sweeper and later worked as a welder at Kanakapura. Efforts are on to nab his associate.
Police are yet to get in touch with Vasantha. They have booked a case under IPC section 174 A (non-appearance in response to proclamation under CrPC) against Gullu, who is in judicial custody.
