Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is slated to virtually inaugurate the new water treatment plant, set up by KMDA at Uttarpara-Kotrung in Hooghly, along with minister and Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim on Monday.
Firhad Hakim, also KMDA chairperson, said, “The plot, which had once been used for building underground brick sewers in Kolkata in the 19th century, was utilized for mitigating the water woes of so many people in Hooghly.”

The new plant, which has a capacity of 55 million gallon water per day, is the biggest in Bengal after Independence.It has come up on 10 acres at a cost of Rs 1,760 crore. Over 20 lakh people stand to benefit from it.
Dilip Yadav, chairman of Uttarpara-Kotrung Municipality, said, “The supply from the new plant will start on Monday.”
