Belagavi: The election for the mayoral post of Belagavi City Corporation (BCC), scheduled on Feb 15 is likely to be unopposed, as the post has been reserved for a woman from a scheduled caste and the opposition does not have a member who comes under the suitable reservation category.
The ruling BJP group has two candidates – Laxmi Rathod and Savita Kamble, who are eligible for the mayoral post. Both candidates are interested in becoming mayor, but they have clarified that they will adhere to the party’s decision .
Amid this, there are rumours about 10-12 BJP councillors being in touch with public works minister Satish Jarkiholi. When media persons asked him about this, the minister said Congress won’t topple the BJP rule in the BCC. “Let them complete the tenure,” he said.
According to BJP sources, even if some councillors shifted to Congress, the mayor will be from BJP only, as Congress has no candidate under the reservation category of ‘scheduled caste woman’. Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil ruled out any such anti-party activities. “There is no doubt the next mayor will be from BJP,” Patil said, expressing confidence.
In the house of a total of 58 members, BJP has a clear majority with 35 seats. Besides, independent members – Shankar Patil and Pooja Patil are supporting BJP. Apart from this, BJP has two parliament members, one MLA and one MLC who have voting power. With this, the number goes up to 41. A total of 33 votes are required to get the mayor elected.
