Vijayapura: As summer approaches, Gumbaz City is bracing for water scarcity, with authorities announcing plans to supply drinking water only once a week. The Vijayapura City Corporation and Water Board are warning residents through garbage collecting vehicles that if they water trees and saplings, or wash their verandahs and vehicles, their water supply will be disconnected.
Citizens are criticizing these warnings and demanding city corporation to suggest how to conserve trees in the city which is synonym for high mercury levels during summer days. Gangadhar Patil, a private employee, told TOI that water scarcity is slowly rising its head in the city and people are worried about coping with the summer heat. “This time, we are hearing new warnings such as not to water the trees and not to wash vehicles. Their warning about the impending water shortage due to dwindling reserves in Bhutanal Lake is okay. We accept their advice of refraining from wasteful practices such as keeping taps open and leaving additional water in the drainage,” he added. He also said that if citizens don’t water the trees, the temperature will go further high.
Sujata Anaje, Jyoti Upadhye, Rajeshwari Patil, Soumya Keshi, Sharada Betgeri, residents of Lingeshwar Colony, Dargah Road, said that washing the entrance of the house is an old practice in North Karnataka region. “If we don’t, the whole house will turn dusty in a day and we will face breathing-related issues. Will local administration take responsibility for our healthcare? Both corporation and water board are threatening us under the guise of creating awareness,” they rued.
Sources in the district administration said that district minister MB Patil had instructed city corporation and water board officials to take precautionary measures to minimise water woes in summer by getting water from Krishna River. “However, they did not act in time. As a result, Bhutanal Lake is about to dry,” they added. Meanwhile, an official from the water board said that despite repeated requests, officials of Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited did not release water.
Despite repeated calls and messages, Vijayapura DC T Bhoobalan and city corporation commissioner Badruddin Soudagar were unavailable for comment.
