Hubballi: To enhance SSLC results, the education department in Dharwad has introduced ‘normative tests’ aimed at preventing student failures.
This initiative, tailored for around 7,500 students identified as significantly lagging in learning, involves daily exams designed by subject experts. Each standardised test comprises a comprehensive question paper encompassing possible questions, totalling 60 marks per subject. Officials have expressed confidence in the positive impact of this measure on student performance.
According to sources, the department wants the outcome of SSLC exams to get better every year. It wishes to reduce the number of just passes in the final examination. Hence, it has launched the normative test initiative. Due to this, students are showing a lot of improvement. The number of students writing the final exam is 29,929 in the district. The number of students who are severely backward in learning has now come down from 7,500 to 2,800.
Deputy director of public Instruction department Shanamuk Swamy Keladimath told TOI that the normative test initiative has been taken up this year to enhance SSLC exam results. “It is improving the performance of children who are backward in learning. Along with this, special classes, taluk-wise workshops, individual schedules, etc. have been planned to better the result. I am confident that these measures will succeed,” he said.
Education officer and SSLC nodal officer Dr Ravikumar Baratakke said that two workshops have already been conducted for students to curb the fear of examination. “They are being trained on how to tackle questions and how to write effective answers. The work of raising the learning level of children by conducting special classes is going on. In addition to conducting standardised tests for children who are backward in learning, individual timetables have been prepared for all students. Children are told to follow it while studying,” he said.
