Coimbatore: The revenue department demolished a portion of an ‘untouchability wall’ at Sevur village in Avinashi Taluk on Saturday after a telephonic conversation between Thoothukudi Lok Sabha member and DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi and Tirupur collector T Christuraj.
A meeting of the DMK election manifesto preparation committee was held at Avinashi.During the meeting, residents from Devendranagar, which is part of the Sevur panchayat near Avinashi, submitted a petition stating, “The residents nearby built a wall to prevent us from using the public road. Despite our requests, the authorities did not take action. However, an inquiry was conducted after we submitted a petition to the chief minister’s office and the district administration. Yet, officials are showing reluctance.”
Following this, Kanimozhi immediately contacted the Tirupur district administration over the phone and demanded prompt action to demolish the ‘untouchability wall’.
Subsequently, revenue officials razed the portion of the wall that had allegedly prevented access to scheduled caste residents of a nearby locality.
