Jaipur: The high court has directed the state government through the chief secretary to constitute a committee within three months for providing benefits of ‘Jyoti Yojna’ to each and every woman who underwent operation for sterilization after giving birth to one or two girl children.
Disposing of a petition by Vandana, 27, a resident of Jhunjhunu district, on Monday, the court also directed the state government to reimburse all expenses with interest of 9% per annum that the petitioner spent on her education from secondary school to GNM/ANM course.
The petitioner had stated that the state’s medical and health department issued a circular on August 19, 2011, by which a scheme titled ‘Jyoti Yojna’ was introduced. The scheme was to grant benefits to and empower women, especially those who gave birth to girl children and voluntarily underwent the process of sterilization. As per the scheme, the petitioner was entitled to the benefits. Later, in 2016, the scheme was closed.
“The woman underwent the sterilization operation on July 16, 2012, and a Jyoti card was issued to her on January 26, 2013. Thereafter she took education from Class 10 to GNM and bore the entire expenses of her education. She submitted several applications for granting her scholarship, educational fees and other expenses, but no heed was paid to her request,” said Intezar Ali, counsel for the petitioner.
