Guwahati: Assam women and child development minister Ajanta Neog on Tuesday told the assembly that over 3,700 children had gone missing from their homes in the state from 2021 to 2023, of which 3,419 have been rescued.
The minister, while replying to a question raised by Congress MLA from Titabor constituency Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah, said the rescued children, who could provide details of their homes, were reunited with their families and those who could not were sent to childcare institutions.
She further informed the house that a total of 6,054 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012 were registered from 2021 to 2023, of which 3,522 have been disposed of.
She said cases of child trafficking are reported from almost all districts of the state, with Kamrup, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur and Biswanath accounting for most such crimes.
The minister further added that anti-human trafficking and special juvenile protection units have been constituted in all districts to prevent child trafficking and information on missing children is uploaded on Track The Missing Child portal.
Neog said the state govt has taken initiatives to impart skill training to officials engaged in rescue and investigation of missing children.
