Pune: The civic administration has proposed to keep Balgandharva Rangmandir shut for a month from this week for its upkeep.
The administration has already taken up repair works at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch at Swargate and Pt Bhimsen Joshi hall at Aundh. The works are expected to continue till the end of February. Organizers of plays and events said that PMC should plan the repairs during monsoon, which is considered “non-peak period”, instead of now to avoid inconveniences.Sunil Mahajan, a city-based event organizer, said that the civic administration has not been consistent with regular maintenance of auditoriums, which is leading to repeated repairs and closures. The administration should carry out repairs during the lean period, he said.
The PMC operates 14 auditoriums in the city. Event organisers and performers, artists, and play groups prefer Balgandharva Rangmandir as it is located in the city’s central area. PMC officials said that the air conditioning system at Balgandharva Rangmandir would undergo repairs. Besides, infrastructure-related works, such as repair and maintenance of washrooms, chairs, sitting arrangements etc would also be carried out. Similar repairs have been taken up at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch and Bhimsen Joshi hall, officials said.
Tushar Deshmukh, who often visits Balgandharv Rangmandir to watch commercial plays, said that the civic administration needs to develop more auditoriums to reduce dependency on Balgandharva Rangmandir. The PMC should also encourage plays to be staged at other facilities which presently are under-utilized for commercial plays.
A proposal for redevelopment of Balgandharva Rangmandir has been under discussion. The BJP leaders had pushed ahead with the reconstruction proposal during the party’s tenure. PMC sources said that the proposal is still on paper and has not moved ahead.
