Patna: The district administration has banned operation of private boats in the Ganga during the Saraswati idol immersion in Patna Sadar area to avoid any untoward incident. The ban will be effective from February 14 to 16.
Shrikant Kundlik Khandekar, sub-divisional magistrate, Patna Sadar, issued the order on Tuesday, stating that under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, movement of private and other boats without permission would remain prohibited till February 16.
“The decision has been taken in view of the boat accidents that have occurred in the past. It is necessary to prohibit the operation of boats in the Ganga on Saraswati Puja,” he said.
“On this occasion, many devotees come to immerse the idol in the Ganga. Devotees go from one bank to another using private boats. These boats illegally operate and accommodate more people than their capacity in a haphazard manner. Under such circumstances, there is a strong possibility of an accident. Considering this, the decision has been taken to ban boat operation in Patna Sadar area from February 14 to February 16,” the SDM said.
