Nagpur: Matches are made in heaven goes the adage. But the marriage of Sameer Shinde and Cynthia Powell was their conscious decision. What makes their union special is the bond that they share is etched with love, mutual respect, and determination.
It all started in the 1990s when Nagpur’s Sameer, then 26 and working for an NGO, came across the profile of 23-year-old Bangalore girl and a commerce graduate, Cynthia, in a community magazine. Her credentials made him curious as she had good looks but suffered from 65% physical disability from the time she was three months old.
Nobody showed any interest in Cynthia. Later it turned out that her cousin, Sheeba, added her profile in the magazine without her knowledge.
“I called her Bangalore residence and introduced myself. Till then, Cynthia said she never knew that a place called Nagpur even existed. She also told me that her profile was posted in the community magazine by her cousin who did not inform her,” said Sameer.
Sameer found something unique about the voice he heard over the telephone. He decided to go to Bangalore to meet Cynthia despite his family — his father, a foot soldier who fought two wars (against China in 1965 and Pakistan in 1971) and got wounded, and two younger sisters — up in arms. Sameer lost his mother in a road accident when he was just 9.
“I went alone to Cynthia’s Bangalore residence. I was unable to handle questions from her father who thought I had come for fun. I started sweating and felt uneasy. Immediately, Cynthia, who was struggling to stand, helped me relax. She took me to a bedroom, gave me a Crocin and some water and asked me to rest. She even managed to calm down her father on the pretext that I had come all the way from Nagpur to meet her,” Sameer said.
