Ludhiana: A lawyer was shot at by a group of assailants in the busy Phase-I market of Dugri here on Wednesday evening, eliciting a strong response from the Ludhiana District Bar Association, which has announced that no court or revenue work would be carried out on Thursday.
The assailants fired at least three gunshots at Sukhmeet Singh Batra (40) of Guru Gyan Vihar, of which two hit the victim — one on his ear and the other on the right side of his chest.Despite being injured, the victim drove himself to DMC Hospital, where he was admitted. Later, police reached the spot to carry out a probe.
Batra, who practises at the Ludhiana district courts, has accused his wife’s brothers for attempting to murder him over a matrimonial dispute. The incident occurred around 4.30pm, when Batra was crossing Dugri in his car. When he slowed down near the Phase I market, a man from another car came out and suddenly started firing at Batra.
Onlookers raised the alarm and informed the police. Before the police could reach the spot, the assailants managed to escape. Batra then drove himself to DMCH.
The victim told police that he had a matrimonial dispute with his wife. He alleged that her brothers had openeded fire at him. However, he is yet to record his statement to lodge an FIR. Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, SHO of Dugri police station, said police found that the accused had come in a white car. “We are trying to trace the accused. We are also scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area to trace the accused,” he said.
