Ludhiana: The bogus employee scam of Ludhiana MC, in which payments of Rs 2.18 crore were made into accounts of 44 non-existent employees from April 2020 to Dec 2023, could be bigger, according to the probe so far.
Officials now suspect that 30 more such ghost employees were being used to extract money fraudulently from the civic body.
Authorities believe more such bogus employees could be existing in the MC’s health branch and they will check payment details to find them.
Sources revealed that authorities were doubtful when it came to the regularisation of sanitation employees too. There are many employees in MC’s health branch and it would be a tedious process to check payment to all of these, said an officer.
A major of the MC’s funds is allocated to the monthly salaries of employees. Even when it comes to the civic body’s salary expense, its 60% share goes to sanitation and lower staff. A committee was also formed to check the records.
MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi has confirmed the move and said there will be more revelations as the final report is awaited. “We have gotten 900 entries checked so There will be action against erring officials,” he said.
The scam had come to light after commissioner Rishi had asked officials of health branch to check payments made to employees from April 2020 to Dec 2023.
When the check blew the lid off the scam, the commissioner had directed officials to file a police complaint and seek an FIR registered against erring employees in the civic body. Though seven employees of the MC have already been booked in connection with the scam, authorities want to ensure there are no fake employees in the department.
