Noida: A ground transportation centre (GTC) providing direct access to buses, metro, rapid rail and pod taxi from the Noida International Airport (NIA) premises will ensure flyers don’t have to exit the terminal to reach their destinations in the city. The centre will come up on 20 acres of land between the two terminals of the airport in the third phase when NIA’s annual passenger capacity is expected to reach 30 million.
The Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, which built the international airport in Switzerland, said the concept of GTC draws from the Zurich Airport’s seamless multimodal network.
“The GTC will be a one-of-a-kind multi-level building developed in phases 3 and 4 of the airport. This facility mirrors those in other renowned international airports, like Heathrow and Frankfurt, offering every mode of transport and parking under one roof,” NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh said.
The construction of the GTC is expected to start in the next 4-5 years, coinciding with the completion of multi-modal connectivity, he added. The bay will house parking and staging areas for passenger vehicles, taxis, and buses, with metro and high-speed rail stations in its underground section. Additionally, it will have a large concourse with commercial spaces, restaurants and lounges on the ground and upper floors.
According to the NIA masterplan, the GTC will function as a central multi-modal hub, providing a hassle-free and seamless experience for passengers, visitors, and employees transferring between terminals and various modes of transport.
The facility will accommodate over 40 buses, 4,500 private and employee cars, and 3,500 employee two-wheelers.
The first phase of NIA, covering 1,334 hectares, is set to be commissioned in Oct with one terminal and a runway to annually handle 12 million passengers. The airport, set to be the country’s largest, will be developed in four phases over 6,000 hectares with a concession period spanning 40 years. In its final phase, the airport will have two terminals, as many runways, and a capacity to manage 70 million passengers annually. The first expansion will begin when the airport reaches 80% of its 12 million passengers per year capacity and will continue in subsequent phases.
