Mounted Cops Put Plans to Shift Maidan Paddock on Hold | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: The city force’s Mounted Police unit has “put on hold” plans to shift their Maidan paddock to another facility, closer to Red Road. The Metro had sought the paddock land to complete construction of the Joka-Esplanade route and the Army had asked the mounted police to look for an alternate site about a year ago.
“We hope that with the stay on the Metro project by the Calcutta HC over concerns about excessive felling of trees, Metro might look for alternatives, including a change in alignment.” said an officer.
The unit had received a letter from Fort William, the custodian of the Maidan, to vacate the paddock to the north of Manohar Das Tarag to facilitate the construction of the Metro line.
All other units of KP located in the Maidan, including a facility for sergeants, have also been asked to “go slow” on finding alternative venues till the case is settled in the HC and a direction is provided. The final stretch of the line, leading to the Esplanade station, passes under the paddock spread over 3,000 sqm or over 32,000 sqft.
