Swayam is a platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in classrooms from secondary level till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and available free of cost to any learner. More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the country have participated in preparing these courses.
The UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation 2016, advising the universities to identify courses where credits can be transferred on to the academic record of the students for courses done on SWAYAM. AICTE has also put out a gazette notification in 2016 and subsequently for adoption of these courses for credit transfer. Students can earn up to 40% of their course credit by completing Swayam courses.
In Bihar, the universities which have been imparting Swayam courses include Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Gaya; Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), Motihari; Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna; B N Mandal University (BNMU), Madhepura; Jai Prakash University (JPU), Chhapra; L N Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga, and Patna University (PU). All these universities are running online courses of the UGC for PG students. And, some colleges under their jurisdiction are running online courses for UG students.
Coordinator of Swayam courses in PU, Ashok Kumar Jha, said that nearly 200 PG students mostly of life sciences and environmental are enrolled in Swayam courses. These courses are also being imparted in three PU colleges — Patna Science College, Magadh Mahila College and Patna Women’s College.
He pointed out that so far only students of science stream are getting attracted to these courses as there are several choices available for them. “There are very limited choices for students of social science and humanities,” he said.
