Noida: Just a year after it was opened to the public, the Rs 1,718-crore Parthala Flyover was partially closed for repairs for over 4 hours on Thursday afternoon reducing traffic to a crawl.
Harried commuters, including school buses, took to social media to vent their frustration as they tried to slice through a queue of vehicles.
Vehicles travelling from Sectors 52, 71 and City Centre to Greater Noida West were diverted through the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad Expressway under the flyover. The traffic diversion remained in force for about four-and-a-half hours from 12.30 pm. The carriageway was reopened after 5 pm. There was no disruption of traffic on the other arm of the flyover, a traffic cop said.
Vinay Yadav, a commuter stuck on the flyover, shared an 8-second video on X, captioned “heavy traffic jam on Parthala Flyover”, showing long queues of honking buses, private cars and taxis standing still on the expressway stretch.
Amarjeet Rathore, a resident of Gaur City in Greater Noida West, said he took the flyover daily to commute to his office in Delhi. “It is surprising to see repair works on the flyover within a year of its operation. A quality audit should be conducted to find out why repairs were needed so soon,” he said.
According to Noida Authority, the bitumen layer on a 5-metre stretch on the Noida-Greater Noida West carriageway had come off recently. Vijay Rawal, deputy general manager (civil) of Noida Authority, said, “The flyover is still under the maintenance period and minor repairs were carried out by the contractor.”
The 600m flyover on the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad Expressway provides a seamless ride for thousands of commuters on the Noida-Greater Noida West link road travelling between Delhi or Noida and Greater Noida West. It was inaugurated last June after missing several deadlines. Currently, around 50,000 vehicles use the elevated road everyday.
