New Delhi: Delhi Police’s Special Cell averted a contract killing by arresting a Ramjas College graduate who was planning to murder a businessman for not paying him ‘protection money’.
The accused, Amit Rana (37), was carrying out extortions from businessmen on behalf of jailed gangster Sonu Dariyapur. A semi-automatic pistol of .32 bore, along with five live cartridges, was recovered from him.“He was involved in six cases of attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, land grabbing and arms act,” said a senior officer.
Rana came on police’s radar after his name cropped up in a sensational shootout that took place on Dec 10 last year. Rana had opened indiscriminate fire at his rival’s house in Khera Kalan and threatened to kill his mother and son. The incident had led to panic in the area. Since then, police had been trailing him even as technical surveillance revealed his active participation in several crimes. The court had issued non-bailable warrants against him.
Recently, police received inputs that Rana would come to a hospital in Shalimar Bagh to commit a murder after which a team comprising ACP Lalit Mohan Negi and inspectors Shiv Kumar and Satish Rana was formed to catch him. “A trap was laid and Rana, travelling in a car, was flagged down by the cops. The suspect whipped out a pistol and fired at the police team. However, the cops used barricades to block his car and overpowered him. He was disarmed and arrested,” the officer added.
According to a statement issued by police, Rana graduated from Ramjas in 2007. His first brush with the law was just a year later when he was arrested in Maurice Nagar in a case of assault. After coming out of jail, he started working for Dariyapur and committed land-grabbings in the area of Rohini, Prashant Vihar and Begampur in northwest Delhi. Several FIRs were registered against him in 2013-14. He also provided logistics, including weapons and shelter, to the gang.
